Whaling was once a vital industry, integral to the islands’ economy and cultural heritage. However, as global perspectives shifted, so too did the Azoreans’ relationship with the ocean.
Today, the Azores stand as a beacon of marine conservation. The community transitioned from exploiting whales to championing their protection, fostering a deep respect for the ocean’s biodiversity. The dramatic geography of this volcanic archipelago has shaped a unique journey of cultural identity that highlights the enduring connection between people and their environment. Through engaging activities and interactions with local experts, the Azores offers insights into the intricate balance between geography and identity, witnessing firsthand how the Azoreans now view the ocean as an invaluable asset to be cherished and preserved.

Travel through the lush landscapes of São Miguel, across the otherworldly terrain of Pico, and to the serene coastlines of Faial, experiencing the islands’ rich natural history and maritime legacy. Whether it’s studying the unique volcanic ecology or delving into the islands’ role in global exploration, the Azores provide diverse learning opportunities in a tranquil and safe setting. Set in the middle of the Atlantic, the Azores enjoy a temperate climate, making it an ideal destination year-round.

Welcome to the Azores!
Begin your journey with a visit to Sete Cidades, one of the island’s most stunning natural wonders. Take in the panoramic views, relax with an optional yoga session, and get an introduction to the program. You’ll also have a chance to learn some basic Portuguese, helping you immerse yourself in the local culture.
Step into the shoes of a marine biologist for a day as you venture out on a Zodiac to observe whales, dolphins, and other marine life. Learn to identify species using photo-identification techniques, collect microplastics, and record acoustic data. This hands-on experience highlights the Azores’ commitment to marine conservation and showcases how the region has shifted from hunting to protecting these magnificent creatures.
Fly to Pico Island, the heart of the Azores’ whaling history. Visit the Whaler’s Museum, where you’ll watch a documentary and engage in a Q&A session with a former whaler. Meet a traditional whale ship carpenter and try your hand at rowing a whale boat, gaining insights into the region’s whaling past and its evolution towards conservation.
Take a short ferry ride to Faial Island and visit the Capelinhos Volcano, where you’ll learn about the volcanic forces that shaped the Azores. Participate in a scrimshaw workshop at the Whaler’s Museum, working with whale tooth ink, and gain a deeper appreciation for the region’s cultural and environmental transformation. Return to Pico Island in the evening.
Fly back to São Miguel Island and visit the historic Gorreana Tea Factory, one of the oldest tea plantations in Europe. Enjoy souvenir shopping and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the Azores, reflecting on how the region’s history of whaling has been replaced by a dedication to sustainability and preservation.
Engage in a traditional Portuguese cozido cooking class, where you’ll prepare this classic dish using the natural heat from Furnas’ volcanic vents. Explore lush gardens and relax in the therapeutic hot springs. Savor the cozido you made, connecting with the land and its traditions in a meaningful way.
