Embark on your adventure as you travel from LAX to the breathtaking Azores.
Arrive in São Miguel and begin your journey with a visit to Sete Cidades, one of the island’s most stunning natural wonders. Take in the panoramic views, relax with an optional yoga session, and get an introduction to the program. You’ll also have a chance to learn some basic Portuguese, helping you immerse yourself in the local culture.
Step into the shoes of a marine biologist for a day as you venture out on a Zodiac to observe whales, dolphins, and other marine life. Learn to identify species using photo-identification techniques, collect microplastics, and record acoustic data. This hands-on experience highlights the Azores’ commitment to marine conservation and showcases how the region has shifted from hunting to protecting these magnificent creatures.
Fly to Pico Island, the heart of the Azores’ whaling history. Visit the Whaler’s Museum, where you’ll watch a documentary and engage in a Q&A session with a former whaler. Meet a traditional whale ship carpenter and try your hand at rowing a whale boat, gaining insights into the region’s whaling past and its evolution towards conservation.
Take a short ferry ride to Faial Island and visit the Capelinhos Volcano, where you’ll learn about the volcanic forces that shaped the Azores. Participate in a scrimshaw workshop at the Whaler’s Museum, working with whale tooth ink, and gain a deeper appreciation for the region’s cultural and environmental transformation. Return to Pico Island in the evening.
Fly back to São Miguel Island and visit the historic Gorreana Tea Factory, one of the oldest tea plantations in Europe. Enjoy souvenir shopping and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the Azores, reflecting on how the region’s history of whaling has been replaced by a dedication to sustainability and preservation.
Engage in a traditional Portuguese cozido cooking class, where you’ll prepare this classic dish using the natural heat from Furnas’ volcanic vents. Explore lush gardens and relax in the therapeutic hot springs. Savor the cozido you made, connecting with the land and its traditions in a meaningful way.
