Begin your journey by flying into Panama City, the heart of global trade.
Kick off the program with an overview of Panama’s geography, history, and its crucial role in global trade. Explore the city on a guided tour, then immerse yourself in local culture with a cooking class that introduces you to the flavors of Panama. Through these activities, you’ll begin to understand the interplay between Panama’s cultural heritage and its economic significance.
Discover the Panama Canal’s pivotal role in global trade with a guided tour that explores its history and operation. Learn about the Panama Canal Expansion Project and discuss how climate change, including rising sea levels and changing weather patterns, is affecting shipping routes and logistics. End the day with an interactive tour of a shipping company, where you’ll delve into the impact of climate change on operations and the pricing of goods.
Engage in a dialogue to explore how climate change is influencing tax policies, international trade regulations, and economic stability across the Americas. Later, learn how Panama is leading the way by granting legal rights to nature. Conclude the day at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute with an interactive session on the effects of climate change on weather patterns and sea levels.
Join a community river cleanup project, where you’ll witness firsthand how local initiatives can drive environmental change. Afterward, explore the fascinating Biodiversity Museum (Biomuseo) and participate in a drum circle that celebrates Panama’s rich cultural heritage. This day’s activities emphasize the connection between local environmental action and broader global challenges.
Take a day trip to Portobelo, a historic town that was once a key hub in global trade. Visit the Royal Customs House to learn about Panama’s trading past and its influences on the region’s development. Participate in a workshop on making traditional Congolese hats and enjoy lunch at a Congolese-inspired restaurant. Afterward, unwind with some beach time, reflecting on the historical and ongoing connections between culture, trade, and the environment.
Explore the lush Gamboa Rainforest Reserve with a guided stroll to observe local wildlife, and consider adding a short cable car ride for a different perspective. After lunch, dive into Panama’s vibrant culture with a salsa dance class.
