From ancient fortresses to modern blockbusters, Croatia has become one of the world’s most cinematic destinations. You’ll explore how film transforms real places into mythic landscapes, how tourism responds to global attention, and how stories told on screen shape identity, culture, and community. Along the way, you’ll step into filming locations, learn traditional crafts, and create your own visual storytelling projects.
Considerations: Swim tests required for participation in water activities. Willingness to navigate hot weather.
Fly from Los Angeles to Dubrovnik with one layover as you begin your journey into the world of myth and cinema.
Arrive in Dubrovnik and settle in with a welcome orientation, an introduction to our global pillars, and the driving question. Practice a little Croatian 101 before enjoying dinner inside the real-life King’s Landing—an immersive setting that blends history and fantasy.
Take a guided walking tour of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before circling the full stretch of the city walls and visiting Minčeta Tower (House of the Undying filming site). Sail to Lokrum Island for a Game of Thrones-themed scavenger hunt, exploring its botanical gardens, peacocks, monasteries, and the saltwater “Dead Sea” lake.
Meet with the Dubrovnik Tourist Board to learn how film sites have shaped global tourism here—and the challenges of balancing fame with preservation. Travel to Trsteno Arboretum, the lush Renaissance garden transformed into the Red Keep gardens, before heading to the Konavle region. Take part in a traditional silk-making workshop, then join a farm-to-table cooking class and dinner at a local agritourism farm.
Journey from Dubrovnik to Split with stops along the way. Explore the ancient Roman ruins of Salona, with temples, amphitheaters, and early churches that speak to centuries of storytelling. Continue to Šibenik, home to Braavos filming sites, where you’ll climb fortresses and visit the Museum of Dalmatian Dogs to learn about the region’s cultural ties to the iconic breed.
Spend the day with Fotoklub Split for a photography workshop. Dialogue with experts about how Game of Thrones reshaped Split’s visual identity, then head out on a photo safari through Old Town. Capture contrasts between Split’s ancient heritage and its cinematic alter ego, then travel to Klis Fortress—once a historic stronghold, transformed on screen into the city of Meereen.
Take a ferry to Brač Island for a full-day excursion. Visit Bračke Šape, an animal sanctuary where volunteers care for abandoned and injured animals. After lunch, head to the Stone Carving School of Nerežišća, where students preserve the island’s ancient craft. See how Brač stone has shaped landmarks across the world—from Diocletian’s Palace to the White House—before returning to Split for a farewell dinner.
Travel back to Dubrovnik and board your flight to Los Angeles, taking with you new perspectives on how myths—ancient and modern—are created, shared, and remembered.
