It all began in the heart of Western Uganda, a hidden gem known as Mbarara. Nestled in this tranquil corner of the world, roughly 200,000 souls call this unassuming town home. Every year, a few thousand adventurous spirits journey from Kampala to explore the enchanting beauty of Lake Mburo National Park. Mbarara, although not the most opulent of destinations, offers the closest refuge to the park’s splendid wildlife, a tapestry of zebras, impalas, elands, leopards, hippos, and the elusive hyenas.
Here, you won’t find the towering skyscrapers of Nairobi or the turquoise beaches of Zanzibar. Instead, you’ll witness the vibrant tapestry of local life. Locals whiz by on motorcycles, headed to bustling markets, or adorned in their most vibrant traditional attire as they make their way to the church or temple. Here, the streets are a shared domain, where vehicles, cows, and goats pay no heed to your presence, and sudden tropical rainstorms are all part of the adventure. Mbarara promises an authentic immersion into the soul of Western Uganda.
What sparked the idea
When Craig Vandermeer returned from his extended sojourn, he realized the profound value of his experience. He recognized the unquenchable thirst for stories that challenge our relationships with our environment and teach us to shatter the shackles of Western-centric narratives. These stories offer a gateway to cross-cultural understanding and inspire a profound appreciation for a globally-conscious perspective.
This epiphany birthed the audacious idea that educational, hands-on experiences should be accessible to all. And so, Insight Global Education was born.
From vision to practice
Following his completion of graduate studies in International Studies, Craig embarked on a mission to provide immersive learning experiences for students spanning high school to university. In 2013, Insight’s pilot program was officially launched, and its resounding success solidified the organization’s vision to ignite a passion for a globally-connected life through immersive learning.
By 2015, Insight had established partnerships with educators seeking to expand their students’ horizons with global learning opportunities. The focus remained firmly on experiential learning and ethical engagement. Insight’s mission was to craft short-term programs for high school students that were not just impactful and culturally immersive but also respectful of local autonomy. In stark contrast to voluntourism, Insight’s student groups were there to learn from the locals, not to perform tasks on their behalf. This principle became the cornerstone of Insight’s philosophy.
What has guided us since
Over the years, Insight firmly rooted itself in the realm of experiential education, broadening its reach to include community and professional development programs. The organization nurtured deep-seated connections with global partners to deliver transformative experiences across the globe. From its humble beginnings with one program in a single country, Insight has burgeoned into an entity that offers a diverse array of programs spanning over 40 locations across six continents. With each step, Insight continues its tireless mission to redefine how students learn about and experience our wondrous world.
