Ecuador

Ecuador offers an extraordinary opportunity to explore ecological and cultural diversity within a single country. From the historic streets of Quito to the Amazon rainforest and the volcanic landscapes of the Andes, Ecuador’s mainland reveals how geography shapes identity, livelihoods, and ways of knowing.

Moving between urban centers, Indigenous communities, rainforest ecosystems, and mountain towns, this program invites students to examine how people adapt to environmental extremes while sustaining culture, biodiversity, and community life.

9
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Across Ecuador’s cities and rural communities, social enterprises and community-led initiatives are creating innovative solutions to economic and environmental challenges. Through engagement with women-led restaurants, community-run lodges, conservation centers, and artisan cooperatives, examine how innovation can emerge outside traditional industrial systems and how local infrastructure supports inclusive, sustainable growth.

13
Climate Action

Ecuador’s location along the equator, combined with its varied elevation and ecosystems, makes climate impacts visible and immediate. Explore how climate change affects rainforests, glaciers, agriculture, and water systems, and how communities respond through conservation and adaptation.

15
Life On Land

From the Amazon rainforest to Andean cloud forests, Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Examine habitat protection, species conservation, and the relationship between human activity and fragile ecosystems.

Landscapes, Knowledge, and Living Systems

This program explores how knowledge is shaped by place. In Ecuador, Indigenous worldviews, colonial history, and contemporary environmental challenges intersect across rainforest, mountain, and city landscapes.

Through hands-on engagement with communities, ecosystems, and cultural traditions, examine how people understand and care for the natural world, how livelihoods are shaped by land and climate, and how responsibility is shared across generations in one of the world’s most ecologically complex regions.
