As landscapes shift from forests to fjords, students consider how geography shapes settlement, energy systems, and transportation choices.

Arrive in Bergen and orient yourself to the city through a walking exploration of the historic harbor and surrounding neighborhoods.

Explore Bergen’s role as a historic trading hub and modern coastal city. Visit Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to examine how maritime trade shaped economic development, urban form, and cultural exchange.

Continue with a fjord excursion aboard a low-emissions or electric vessel, learning about marine ecosystems, fisheries management, and the impacts of climate change on coastal communities. Discussions focus on Norway’s “blue economy” and sustainable ocean stewardship.

Engage with environmental educators, researchers, or planners working at the intersection of climate science, conservation, and community resilience. Learning centers on how Bergen responds to increased rainfall, sea-level rise, and extreme weather through adaptive infrastructure and urban planning.

Visit a climate-focused institution such as the Climate House or a renewable energy learning center to examine how research, education, and public policy support climate action.
