Norway

Norway offers students a compelling lens into how innovation, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility intersect in a modern, high-functioning society. From Oslo’s green urban design and circular infrastructure to fjords shaped by ice, water, and time, students explore how Norway balances economic development with climate responsibility and community wellbeing.

Through hands-on learning with sustainability leaders, youth activists, scientists, and Indigenous Sámi knowledge holders, Norway becomes a living classroom for examining how societies can design systems that prioritize people, planet, and long-term resilience.

9
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Norway is internationally recognized for its forward-thinking infrastructure and commitment to innovation. Students explore how renewable energy systems, zero-emissions transportation, and circular design are integrated into daily life. Through site visits and conversations with educators, designers, and sustainability professionals, learners examine how infrastructure can support both economic growth and environmental responsibility.

11
Sustainable Cities and Communities

Oslo consistently ranks among the world’s most sustainable cities. Students investigate how urban planning, public transportation, housing, and green public spaces contribute to livable, inclusive communities. Learning focuses on how policy, design, and citizen engagement shape cities that prioritize wellbeing, accessibility, and climate resilience.

13
Climate Action

Climate action in Norway is deeply connected to energy choices, coastal ecosystems, and public accountability. Students explore how Norway addresses climate challenges through renewable energy, emissions reduction, and environmental education. Experiences highlight the tension between Norway’s role as an energy producer and its leadership in climate mitigation, encouraging critical thinking about complexity, trade-offs, and responsibility.

Innovation, Environment, and Shared Responsibility

Norway’s global reputation for sustainability is rooted in long-term thinking, strong public institutions, and a cultural emphasis on collective responsibility. Students explore how environmental values are embedded not only in policy, but in everyday practices—from public transit and waste reduction to outdoor recreation and education.

At the same time, learners critically examine whose voices shape sustainability efforts and how Indigenous Sámi perspectives, youth activism, and local communities contribute to climate solutions. This theme invites students to see sustainability not as a fixed achievement, but as an ongoing process shaped by dialogue, innovation, and accountability.

Sample itinerary

At Insight, our programs are designed to reflect the unique interests, goals, and needs of your students. Each itinerary is thoughtfully customized in collaboration with schools, ensuring meaningful alignment with your learning objectives.

Begin your journey to Norway. Participate in an orientation and a welcome dinner, introducing program themes around sustainability, innovation, climate responsibility, and community wellbeing.

Explore Oslo through a guided walking experience focused on green urban design, public transportation, and climate-forward infrastructure. Examine how housing, mobility, and public space are intentionally designed to support low-carbon living and social equity.

Later, engage in a Sámi-led cultural experience, learning through storytelling and dialogue about Indigenous relationships to land, reindeer herding, and long-term environmental stewardship.

Meet with local youth activists or environmental organizations to explore how civic engagement and public accountability shape climate policy in Norway. Discussions focus on systems change, advocacy, and the role of young people in sustainability leadership.

In the afternoon, visit a repair or reuse-focused initiative that highlights circular economy principles in action.

Conclude the day with a floating sauna experience along Oslo’s harbor, reflecting on Nordic traditions that connect wellness, nature, and community.

Travel by train along one of Norway’s most scenic rail routes, examining how infrastructure connects cities and remote regions while minimizing environmental impact. As landscapes shift from forests to fjords, students consider how geography shapes settlement, energy systems, and transportation choices.

Arrive in Bergen and orient yourself to the city through a walking exploration of the historic harbor and surrounding neighborhoods.

Explore Bergen’s role as a historic trading hub and modern coastal city. Visit Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to examine how maritime trade shaped economic development, urban form, and cultural exchange.

Continue with a fjord excursion aboard a low-emissions or electric vessel, learning about marine ecosystems, fisheries management, and the impacts of climate change on coastal communities. Discussions focus on Norway’s “blue economy” and sustainable ocean stewardship.

Engage with environmental educators, researchers, or planners working at the intersection of climate science, conservation, and community resilience. Learning centers on how Bergen responds to increased rainfall, sea-level rise, and extreme weather through adaptive infrastructure and urban planning.

Later, head into the surrounding mountains or coastal trails for an outdoor leadership experience, emphasizing teamwork, decision-making, and connection to place in dynamic natural environments.

Return to Oslo by train or flight. Spend the afternoon engaging with cultural institutions such as the National Museum, MUNCH Museum, or Nobel Peace Center, examining how creativity, ethics, and social values intersect in Norwegian society.

Evening reflection connects learning across cities, landscapes, and systems.

Visit a climate-focused institution such as the Climate House or a renewable energy learning center to examine how research, education, and public policy support climate action.

Conclude the program with a synthesis session focused on innovation, responsibility, and how lessons from Norway translate to students’ own communities.

Depart Norway, carrying forward insights into sustainable cities, climate leadership, and shared responsibility in a changing world.
