Quality Education

Explore how knowledge is preserved and transmitted across generations—from one of the world’s oldest universities in Coimbra to informal learning through music, craftsmanship, and community storytelling.

11
Sustainable Cities and Communities

Oslo consistently ranks among the world’s most sustainable cities. Students investigate how urban planning, public transportation, housing, and green public spaces contribute to livable, inclusive communities. Learning focuses on how policy, design, and citizen engagement shape cities that prioritize wellbeing, accessibility, and climate resilience.

13
Climate Action

Climate action in Norway is deeply connected to energy choices, coastal ecosystems, and public accountability. Students explore how Norway addresses climate challenges through renewable energy, emissions reduction, and environmental education. Experiences highlight the tension between Norway’s role as an energy producer and its leadership in climate mitigation, encouraging critical thinking about complexity, trade-offs, and responsibility.

Innovation, Environment, and Shared Responsibility

Norway’s global reputation for sustainability is rooted in long-term thinking, strong public institutions, and a cultural emphasis on collective responsibility. Students explore how environmental values are embedded not only in policy, but in everyday practices—from public transit and waste reduction to outdoor recreation and education.

At the same time, learners critically examine whose voices shape sustainability efforts and how Indigenous Sámi perspectives, youth activism, and local communities contribute to climate solutions. This theme invites students to see sustainability not as a fixed achievement, but as an ongoing process shaped by dialogue, innovation, and accountability.

Welcome to Portugal. Settle in and begin orienting yourself to the landscapes, histories, and cultures that will shape the days ahead.

Engage with marine conservation at Ocean Alive, an organization dedicated to protecting coastal ecosystems through community-led action. Centered on the Sado Estuary, you’ll investigate why estuaries function as critical nursery habitats for dolphins, fish, and shellfish, and how education and behavior change play a central role in ocean health.

Continue exploring sustainability in practice at BioVilla, a living model of ecological, social, economic, and cultural sustainability. Through hands-on learning around environmental education and organic farming, you’ll consider what sustainable living looks like in action—and how these practices can be adapted elsewhere.

Step into history through Quake, an immersive experience that brings the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake to life. Using innovative technology and rigorous historical research, you’ll examine how this seismic event reshaped Lisbon, influenced Enlightenment thinking, and continues to inform modern disaster preparedness.

Later, dive into ocean systems at the Lisbon Oceanarium, exploring how climate change and greenhouse gas emissions impact marine ecosystems. Trace the connections between daily consumption and ocean health, and deepen your learning during an overnight stay beside the tanks—an unforgettable opportunity to observe marine life after hours.

Explore Portugal’s long relationship with salt by examining ancient extraction techniques rooted in deposits formed millions of years ago. Learn how salt shaped trade, culture, and livelihoods from prehistoric times to the present.

Continue into the agricultural heartland at Quinta do Seminário in Soure, where rice production reflects both tradition and innovation. Walk through the fields, engage with local producers, and gain insight into rural life and the enduring importance of agriculture in shaping regional identity.

Uncover centuries of academic and cultural influence at the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the historic university complex, including the Joanina Library, and reflect on the role of education in shaping Portuguese society.

Then, immerse yourself in Coimbra’s distinctive musical tradition at the Coimbra Music Museum. Through instruments, recordings, and archival materials, you’ll explore the evolution of fado and examine the craftsmanship behind musical instrument making, connecting music to place, identity, and memory.

Travel from Coimbra into the Schist Villages, where stone-built homes and winding streets reveal layers of rural history. Pause along the way for a hands-on cooking class with a local chef, using regional ingredients and traditional techniques.

As you explore these villages, engage with community members to understand daily life, local traditions, and contemporary efforts to promote Accessible Tourism. Meet with an organization working to ensure inclusive nature-based experiences, and consider how tourism can support both preservation and equity.

Dive into Portugal’s living musical landscape through Música Portuguesa a Gostar Dela Própria, a project devoted to documenting and celebrating traditional and contemporary music across the country. Through recordings and interviews, you’ll explore how music reflects regional identity and cultural continuity.

Later, examine culinary heritage at the Olive Oil Museum, housed in a former olive oil factory. Interactive exhibits and historic machinery guide you through the production process, highlighting olive oil’s central role in Portuguese history, cuisine, and rural economies.

Explore ancient carnival traditions at the Centro Ibérico da Máscara de Lazarim. Through storytelling, symbolism, and craftsmanship, you’ll investigate the cultural meaning behind mask-making and participate in a hands-on workshop that brings this vibrant Iberian tradition to life.
