Malta

Malta sits at the crossroads of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, shaped by centuries of migration, empire, and resistance. From ancient cities and fortified harbors to contemporary movements for gender equity, LGBTQ+ rights, and migrant justice, the island offers students a powerful lens into how history, politics, and human rights intersect in a modern democratic society. Engage with local activists, educators, artists, and community organizations to experience civic participation, social change, and community-led advocacy in the Mediterranean.

5
Gender Equality

Malta provides a compelling context for examining gender equity within a rapidly evolving European society. Students engage with women leaders, healthcare advocates, and policy experts to explore issues such as reproductive rights, political representation, and gender-based violence. Through dialogue and workshops, learners examine how cultural norms, religion, and law shape women’s rights, and how advocacy is driving change.

10
Reduced Inequalities

As both a destination and a transit point for migrants crossing the Mediterranean, Malta offers critical insight into migration, asylum, and social inclusion. Students engage with organizations working alongside migrant and refugee communities to examine access to housing, healthcare, and employment, while exploring how inequality is shaped by citizenship, race, gender, and legal status.

16
Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

Malta’s legal frameworks, civic institutions, and activist movements provide a window into how democratic systems respond to social pressure and evolving human rights norms. Students explore how laws are debated, challenged, and reformed through meetings with politicians, legal advocates, and civil society organizations working to strengthen justice, accountability, and participation.

Power, Identity, and Civic Voice

Malta’s layered history of conquest and governance has left a lasting imprint on its social and political landscape. Students explore how power has been exercised, resisted, and reimagined over time, from medieval fortresses and colonial rule to contemporary movements for equality and justice.

By engaging directly with activists, community organizations, and local leaders, learners examine how identity, belief, and lived experience shape civic action. This theme invites students to consider how social change emerges through participation, dialogue, and collective responsibility in a small but globally connected nation.

Sample itinerary

At Insight, our programs are designed to reflect the unique interests, goals, and needs of your students. Each itinerary is thoughtfully customized in collaboration with schools, ensuring meaningful alignment with your learning objectives.

Begin your journey to the Mediterranean.

Arrive in Malta and settle into Valletta, a fortified city shaped by centuries of empire, resistance, and migration. Begin with an orientation walk through the historic streets, using architecture, fortifications, and harbor views to introduce Malta’s strategic role in the Mediterranean.

In the evening, gather for a welcome dinner followed by a live music experience, such as traditional għana, exploring how music functions as storytelling, cultural memory, and social commentary.

Explore Malta’s political history on a guided walk. Valletta’s grand fortifications, baroque architecture, coastal viewpoints, and narrow streets provide a striking backdrop for examining governance, colonial legacies, and national identity in a small island nation.

In the afternoon, participate in a traditional tile-painting or printmaking workshop, learning how Maltese visual symbols, religious iconography, and public art communicate values, resistance, and belonging. Students create their own pieces inspired by themes of justice, identity, or community.

End the day attending a local football match or youth league game, experiencing sport as a site of neighborhood pride, social cohesion, and collective identity.

Engage with organizations and educators working on human rights, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ advocacy, exploring how activism operates within Malta’s evolving social and legal landscape.

Later, take part in a theatre or storytelling workshop led by a local artist, using movement, voice, and narrative to reflect on lived experience, identity, and expression. The session offers students a creative way to process complex social themes.

Step into daily Maltese life through a neighborhood exploration focused on markets, cafés, and community spaces. Learn how food, language, and ritual reinforce belonging in close-knit communities.

In the afternoon, join a community cooking experience, preparing traditional Maltese dishes and discussing how food reflects history, trade routes, and migration.

Head to the coast for a guided kayaking session, exploring Malta from the water. Along the route, discuss maritime borders, migration pathways, and the Mediterranean as both a connector and a barrier.

After time on the water, debrief the experience through conversations about environmental responsibility, tourism pressure, and shared coastal stewardship.

Travel to Gozo to explore rural life and slower rhythms beyond the capital. Visit community sites that highlight local traditions, crafts, and intergenerational knowledge.

In the afternoon, enjoy time at the Blue Lagoon or a coastal swimming area, balancing learning with embodied experience. A light reflection connects tourism, access, and environmental strain without over-structuring the moment.

Conclude the program with a closing dialogue focused on how students’ experiences in Malta connect to global conversations about human rights, civic participation, and community resilience.

Depart Malta carrying new perspectives on how small places hold big stories—and how culture, creativity, and collective action shape more just futures.
