Our approach to student leadership

Growth through experience, reflection, and responsibility.

Learning leadership by doing

Insight programs create space for students to step into leadership in ways that feel meaningful, supported, and appropriate to the group. Through daily opportunities to take responsibility, support peers, and contribute in real-world contexts, students learn leadership by doing. Leadership may look different from day to day, but it is grounded in participation, awareness, and accountability.

Reflection, responsibility, and growth

Reflection is central to this process. Through guided questions, shared discussion, and daily debriefs, students consider how they showed up, how the group functioned, and what they might do differently next time. By connecting action to impact and rotating responsibilities across the group, leadership becomes a shared, accessible practice rather than a fixed role or title. Leadership on an Insight program is not about standing out, but about learning how to show up thoughtfully, support others, and carry lessons forward into future classrooms, communities, and choices.

  • Students are invited to take on rotating leadership roles that support group flow, communication, and awareness. This might include helping set the tone for the day, supporting transitions, or keeping the group mindful of risks and shared expectations.
  • Students engage with daily questions that frame learning and reflection. These questions encourage observation, curiosity, and discussion, helping students practice leading with inquiry rather than answers.
  • Evening debriefs create space for students to reflect on experiences, name challenges, and recognize growth. Students are encouraged to contribute observations, raise questions, and acknowledge peer leadership.
  • Students are encouraged to take part in thanking local guides, educators, and community partners. This practice reinforces respect, gratitude, and awareness of shared effort and collaboration.
  • Throughout the program, students are supported in navigating group dynamics, decision-making, and moments of challenge. Leadership emerges through collaboration, empathy, and adaptability rather than performance.
  • Insight’s approach to student leadership is intentionally scaffolded. Structure is provided early, and responsibility gradually shifts as students grow more confident in their roles. This progression allows students to take meaningful ownership while feeling supported throughout the experience.
