Students explore Taiwan’s political history, freedom of expression, and grassroots movements, reflecting on the role of citizen participation in shaping just and accountable institutions.

Language, Identity, and Civic Life

Language is central to understanding Taiwan. Through Mandarin language practice, school exchanges, and daily interactions, students gain confidence communicating across cultures while deepening appreciation for how language shapes identity and belonging.

At the same time, learners explore Taiwan’s complex history, from Indigenous cultures and colonial rule to martial law and contemporary democracy. Art, music, food, and public space become entry points for examining activism, memory, and cultural expression in a society where civic participation is deeply woven into everyday life.

Sample itinerary

Begin international travel to Taipei, transitioning from home into a new cultural and linguistic environment.

Arrive in Taipei and meet your Insight facilitator and local guide. Settle into accommodations and take an introductory walk through the neighborhood to observe daily life.

Participate in a cultural orientation session, learning local Mandarin phrases and social customs. Conclude the day with a visit to a local night market, using food and conversation as an entry point into Taiwanese culture.

Visit a local school or university for a language exchange with Taiwanese students. Engage in conversation practice, collaborative activities, and shared learning, building confidence in Mandarin while fostering cross-cultural connection.

In the afternoon, explore how education supports innovation and civic life through a visit to an academic or research institution, followed by reflection on global learning systems.
