Croatia

Croatia offers a powerful lens into how history, geography, and identity shape modern Europe. Along the Adriatic coast, layers of empire, maritime trade, and cultural exchange meet the pressures of mass tourism, environmental change, and global storytelling.

Centered on the Dalmatian Coast, this program explores how coastal cities, rural regions, islands, and freshwater ecosystems navigate preservation, reconciliation, and sustainability. Learn how communities with deep roots in history wrestle with modern demands on heritage, natural systems, and civic life.

When Cities Become Stories

This program looks at how cultural identity is shaped both from within and by global audiences. In Croatia, medieval cities, post-war memory, and everyday community life exist alongside powerful external narratives created through tourism, film, and international media. From UNESCO-listed old towns to film locations recognized worldwide, Croatia offers a living case study in how places are experienced differently by residents and visitors.

Through engagement with photographers, cultural practitioners, and community spaces, explore who controls the narrative of place, how identity evolves over time, and what responsibility comes with representing culture in an increasingly visible and mediated world.

Sample itinerary

At Insight, our programs are designed to reflect the unique interests, goals, and needs of your students. Each itinerary is thoughtfully customized in collaboration with schools, ensuring meaningful alignment with your learning objectives.

Depart for southern Croatia, beginning your journey along the Adriatic coast.

Arrive in Dubrovnik and orient through a guided exploration of the Old City, where preservation and tourism management coexist within a UNESCO-listed urban landscape. Engage with Croatia’s recent history through learning focused on the Yugoslav Wars and the Siege of Dubrovnik. Explore how memory is preserved through public spaces, museums, and narrative framing, and examine how cities recover while carrying visible and invisible scars.

Conclude by dining in the narrow alleys of Old Town and participate in an introductory reflection on memory, identity, and stewardship in historic cities.

Travel into the Konavle region to explore rural traditions shaped by environment and history. Participate in a traditional silk-making workshop to learn about mulberry cultivation and weaving practices tied to local costume and heritage.

Continue to a farm-to-table cooking class and dinner at an agritourism farm, using local ingredients to explore connections between food systems, land use, and sustainability.

Take a short boat ride from Dubrovnik’s Old Town to Lokrum Island, a protected nature reserve known for botanical gardens, shaded forest paths, and swimming coves. Explore trails, historic monastery ruins, and panoramic viewpoints, and discuss how island landscapes offer contrast to urban heritage and memory. Enjoy the beach or participate in guided kayaking before returning to Dubrovnik for dinner.

Head north along the Dalmatian Coast with a stop in Šibenik to engage with local cultural heritage through an exploration of the Museum of Dalmatian Dogs, highlighting the breed’s historical significance in the region.

Continue to Split, arriving in time to begin exploring Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built for the Roman emperor and now woven into the fabric of the city’s Old Town.

Evening reflection ties Roman heritage to contemporary identity and community life.

Spend the day with local photographers and storytellers. Begin with a conversation about how film and media (including major international productions) have shaped Split’s visual identity and tourism flows, and how narrative and perception influence lived experience.

Then engage in a photography workshop through Split’s Old Town, documenting contrasts between ancient urban heritage and contemporary representations.

Take a day trip to Krka National Park, walking trails among waterfalls, freshwater systems, and diverse plant and animal life. Discuss conservation, sustainable tourism management, and how protected areas balance access with ecological protection.

In the evening, attend a local football match to experience community identity, collective pride, and public life through sport.

Conclude the program with a final reflection. Discuss how experiences across southern Croatia offer insights into leadership, sustainability, heritage, and shared futures before departing for home.
