Baseball, bluegrass, and boxing for 250 years and counting! Knock it out of the park in the home of our 16th president, the Greatest boxer of All Time, and one of America’s oldest equestrian competitions. Zipline through caves, cruise a steamboat along the river, discover the origins of the Louisville slugger, and even catch a game in the heart of America, nestled west of the mystical Appalachian frontier.

Louisville provides an exceptional lens through which to interact with United States history, civil rights, arts, and the evolution of American heritage. Through sports, workshops, dialogues, hands-on experiences, and the natural landscape, students engage directly with the organizations, artists, and leaders shaping “a more perfect union” today. These interactions offer valuable insight into how local communities address social challenges, preserve cultural traditions, and build pathways toward a future that values equality and freedom, as enshrined to all in the Constitution.

Itinerary at a Glance

Explore Museum Row and downtown on a guided walk before gathering for a welcome dinner and introduction to the program’s central question.

Discover Muhammad Ali’s influence on sport, civil rights, and humanitarian action through interactive exhibits and a leadership workshop. Explore the diverse lives of Kentuckians such as President Lincoln at the Frazier History Museum, meet the Louisville Urban League, and uncover downtown’s layered past.

Go behind the scenes at Churchill Downs, watch the morning track activity, and explore the Kentucky Derby Museum. Then descend into the Louisville Mega Cavern for an underground aerial ropes course packed with suspension bridges and zip lines.

See how iconic bats are made at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, learn the rhythms and instruments of bluegrass in a hands-on workshop, and cheer with the local community at a Louisville Bats game.

Echoing classical Jeffersonian architecture, learn about the people enslaved on the property at Historic Farmington. Prepare regional food in a cooking workshop, then investigate the history and technology of the Belle of Louisville before a river cruise.

Return to Los Angeles with new perspectives on how American ideals are interpreted and pursued within one city.
