Why Alternative Learning Environments Matter

January 25, 2026

A recent New York Times piece by Jia Lynn Yang raises an important question, using some striking numbers: rising rates of ADHD, autism, anxiety, and depression among young people.

Part of this trend reflects better screening and awareness. But part of it reflects how children are growing up. School days have become longer, more structured, and more academically demanding. Recess has shrunk. Expectations have risen. The pace has quickened—and for many students, there is less room to learn or develop differently.

One expert in the article puts it simply: “The track has become narrower and narrower.”

The suggestion is that many students aren’t struggling because something is wrong with them, but because the environments they’re in allow for less variation than they once did.

This is one reason why alternative learning environments—including student travel programs—can be meaningful. Outside the classroom, students often move more, collaborate more naturally, and learn through real-world experiences rather than constant evaluation. For some, it’s the first time learning feels manageable instead of overwhelming.

It isn’t a cure-all, and it doesn’t resolve the systemic pressures built into education. But it does offer a different rhythm—one that many young people respond to.

On travel programs, the pace shifts. Students engage with people, places, and problems in ways that aren’t driven by test scores or rigid benchmarks. They move, try things, ask questions, and often surprise themselves with what they’re capable of.

Travel isn’t a solution to the challenges facing education, and it isn’t meant to be. But it can give students room to breathe. And sometimes, that change in environment is enough to help them re-engage with learning in a healthier, more sustainable way.
