What does it take for a community to shape its future and express its culture?

Fun fact: while Captain Jack Sparrow is certainly fictional, pirate activity near Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in the 17th century was no joke! The name means Rich Port in Spanish after all… rainforests, food, forts, music, and aquamarine ports await.

This program will take students on an immersive journey through Puerto Rico, exploring how populations shape their futures while conveying the vibrant culture and stories that define them via a blend of focused site visits, conversations with journalists and civic organizations, and community-led experiences.

Day trips to El Yunque and Adjuntas add a powerful lens on stewardship and community self-management beyond the capital. Cultural workshops in dance, music, and visual arts deepen understanding of identity as something lived and expressed, not just discussed.

Itinerary at a Glance

Travel from Los Angeles to San Juan.

Settle into San Juan and explore the streets, coastal fortifications and rich history of Old San Juan, including El Morro.

Go behind the scenes at a music studio, meet a local street artist and read neighborhood murals as public storytelling. Then learn salsa through rhythm, movement and shared celebration.

Explore El Yunque National Forest through its visitor center and a low-intensity rainforest walk. Observe plants, sounds and micro-habitats, before ziplining above the forest canopy and cooling off in a natural pool.

Investigate how decisions are made at El Capitolio, then meet a reporter from the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo to practice evaluating sources and building evidence. A boxing session connects discipline and resilience with community pride.

Travel to Adjuntas to visit Casa Pueblo, a model of community self-management. Meet organizers, see community radio in action, visit a connected coffee farm and enjoy a traditional food stop along the Ruta del Lechón.

Enjoy time at Isla Verde Beach and browse Fortaleza Street before the journey home.

Important Considerations

Expect tropical heat, humidity, rain, and insects.

Outdoor experiences include El Yunque, a natural waterfall pool and the beach. Swim tests are required for swimming activities.

Students should be prepared for regular city walking and active experiences such as dance, zip lining, and boxing.

Discussions may address Puerto Rico’s relationship with the United States, representation, government, and self-determination.
