The Yukon, a vast and rugged expanse in Canada’s north, is more than just a geographical wonder; it’s a living testament to the nation’s history, ecology, and indigenous cultures.

Indigenous Land Management

Inaugurated under the ‘Umbrella Accords’ between Yukon First Nations and the Government of Canada, Tombstone is one of Canada’s only Indigenous-managed national parks. Take a guided tour of the park with a local Indigenous elder to learn about Indigenous land management practices and conservation efforts.


About The Yukon

From exploring climate change and the environment to diving into contemporary issues in indigenous communities, the Yukon provides an immersive opportunity for students to explore and embrace Canada’s north. This program blends both urban and rural settings, bringing students through experiences that dive straight into the history of the region.

Program highlights

  • Participate in a guided hike through Tombstone Territorial Park. Learn about the Indigenous-led umbrella accords and immerse yourself in the wild.

  • Embark on a dog mushing adventure. Meet the staff and dogs you’ll be working with and learn about the ethics of dog mushing before getting on a sled yourself. 

  • Participate in a glass blowing workshop. Create your own masterpiece!

  • Participate in a medicine-making workshop led by an Indigenous elder. Learn about the healing elements of plants that surround you.

Sample Itinerary

  • Travel to Whitehorse, The Yukon.
  • Head an hour out of Whitehorse to Haines Junction for a day connecting with Indigenous elders. Learn about their way of life and how they sustainably live off the land in a unique outdoor village setting. Later, embark on an ice fishing adventure. 
  • Participate in a glass blowing workshop and create your own masterpiece. Then, visit a cultural museum for an educational experience. 

  • Later, visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and learn about the diverse wildlife native to the region. In the evening, head to a lakeside lodge with wood cabins from which you’ll have a good chance to view the northern lights.
  • Explore the area around your unique lodge accommodations by buckling on some snowshoes. Connect with a community member to learn about the impacts of land claims and the impacts of climate change in the Yukon.

  • Later, embark on a dog mushing adventure. Meet the staff and dogs you’ll be working with and learn about the ethics of dog mushing before getting on a sled yourself. Tonight is another great opportunity to try and view the northern lights.
  • Pack up and return to Whitehorse. Participate in a medicine making workshop with an Indigenous elder. Later, pick up your glass blowing masterpieces. Then begin your journey home.
  • Complete your journey home.

Optional Trip Extension to Dawson

  • Head to the airport for a short flight to Dawson City. Upon arrival take a guided tour through Dawson’s historic downtown, visiting Peabody’s Parlour, the City Theatre, and more.

  • Afterwards head to the Midnight Dome to get a full 360-view of the Klondike River Valley. For the night head out to see the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights.
  • Participate in a guided hike through Tombstone Territorial Park, learn about the Indigenous led umbrella accords, and immerse yourself in the wild. Includes snowshoeing, sightseeing, learning and exploring in a beautiful territorial park. Inaugurated under the ‘Umbrella Accords’ between Yukon First Nations and the Government of Canada, Tombstone is one of Canada’s only indigenous managed, national parks.
  • Complete your journey home.
